From OPay to OBus The Journey of Opera into Nigeria Transport Industry

It is said that “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a step” but with the journey of Opera a tech giant into the Nigeria transport industry, one might as well add that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a giant step as Opera, popularly known with the Operamini browser sometime in 2017 made their way into the African market with the launch of a mobile money platform called OPay.

The OPay service which is gradually gaining grounds in Nigeria after its official launch in 2018, with agents spread across various states and lots of mouth-watering and juicy offers such as; 95 Naira for 100 Naira airtime, Zero charges on deposit, etc. Many mobile money agents are adopting the Opay service as their choice platform.

The ORide Service from OPay

Just when the mobile money companies think they’ve seen it all, the tech giant took a swift dive into the motorbike ride-hailing booking service by launching yet another competitive platform called ORide; a transport ride-hailing service like Uber which connects passengers who are in need of fast movement to Bike ridders. This service was launched in May 2019 in Lagos state Nigeria and is gradually making its expansion into other cities in the country.

The Birth of OBus

The Nigeria transport industry has seen lots of Taxi ride-hailing services with Lagos State being the launching point for many but a Bus hailing service is one of a kind and the fact that it is pioneered by OPay, makes it more interesting since this comes not too long after the launch of OTrike service(a tricycle-hailing service popularly known as Keke in Nigeria launched by the same company.

Although this appears to be complete domination of the country’s transport service, it is a good start since the transport sector of the Nigerian market still has huge untapped potential and have since been left in the hands of none professionals for years.

OBus is still in its beta stage at the moment, but we hope to see it get through this stage and become a standard service.

Will OPay visit the Nigerian Rail transport soon? Our eyes are open as we wait for the next big announcement.
