Working As a Farm Worker in Canada
The farm worker’s role is a seasonal role where you are required to perform general orchard maintenance (prune trees through the spring and fall -weather events/frost may change the volume of work required), assist with the planting of new orchards and assist in the installation of new irrigation systems in the spring. You may also assist in maintaining and repairing existing systems as needed. During Harvest, the workers will assist where needed (either picking, swamping, sorting, packing, etc.) If you are assigned picking, you will ensure that the cherries are picked in the orchard, with minimal damage to the tree and the fruit, while maintaining safety standards.

Duties and Responsibilities of Farm Worker
As a farm worker in Canada, there are certain duties you are expected to perform daily or every workday and some of these duties include;
- Plucking fruits from vines or trees and placing them in baskets or containers
- Sorting fruits based on their sizes, color, or level of ripeness to ensure that only high-quality produce is sent to market
- Pack harvested fruits into boxes or crates based on specific guidelines to ensure the safe transportation of the produce to the point of delivery
- Prune trees as instructed and assist as needed around the orchard
- Pick the fruit safely without damage to oneself, the fruit, or the tree.
- Take direction from the Team Leader and Field QC teams
- Manage your picker tags/your count of totes.
- Take part in Health and Safety training and ongoing ladder training.

Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities
- Working in a farming environment can be hectic and days off may be extremely limited during picking season.
- Most workdays start at 5 am and run until early afternoon (picking hours may change to night picking from Late July to the end of August)
- Work hours are not calendar-based but are dependent on crop maturity and weather.
- Hours per week are variable (40-60+ hours)
- Applicants must be available from early July until early September.
- Work is conducted outside; it is advisable to be prepared for the weather by wearing layers.
- All safety equipment (including headlamps for night picking will be provided to you).
